Turns out that the Bookmark function that is built into Discourse forums is super useful. I was talking to @expede about it and she agrees that really, it’s most useful functionality for us right now is more like “Snooze”: you can Bookmark a post and choose when Discourse should notify you about it.
Discourse lets you customize text strings within the app from the admin interface, so I attempted to find the right label(s) for Snooze where it is visibly listed, but haven’t tracked it down yet 
I also looked at changing the Bookmark icon into something else. Looks like you can do a theme that includes custom icons:
